Edgefield - Hogshead
Edgefield in Troutdale is Oregon’s second malt whiskey distillery. The base for the whiskey is ale from the Edgefield brewery. Like in most other American malt whiskey distilleries, the still is of the Holstein-type. Edgefield’s malt whiskey, ‘Hogshead’, matures mostly in bourbon barrels, but some casks which have contained red wine. are also used. 'Hogshead' is bottled at 3 y.o. and 46%. It's a very light whiskey, with soft vanilla and light chocolate on the nose. These sweetish notes give way to a palate with fudge-like fruitiness and then a drier finish. A pretty inoffensive dram, nothing that 'sticks out'. I also tasted a 3 y.o. cask sample (54%) from a bourbon barrel. More vanilla, more chocolate, more body, something resembling liquorice root on the palate and the finish is pretty dry.
